American Airlines recently signed a long-awaited credit card deal with Citigroup. Citi has announced that it will become the sole issuer of the American Airline cards in 2026. At this time both Citi & Barclays issue American Airline cards.
American Airlines Signs New Deal With Citi As Sole Credit Card Issuer
The new deal with Citi as the sole issuer will begin in January 2026. The new deal is for ten years until 2036.
American Airlines will also become an airline transfer partner of the Citi ThankYou travel program.
Existing Barclays cardholders will be converted to the Citi American Airlines cards starting in 2026. If you haven’t had the Barclays Aviator Red card, which earns American Airlines AAdvantage miles after only 1 purchase, you may want to consider getting it before 2026.

American Airlines also announced that it expects payments it receives from its co-branded credit cards and other partners to grow 10% a year. In the 12 months through September 30, 2024 American Airlines received $5.6 billion from their co-branded credit card deals.
