Our Guide to United Airlines MileagePlus Miles Pooling
If you’re a frequent flyer with United Airlines or are simply looking to maximize the value of your miles, you can probably benefit from United Airlines new miles pooling. Earlier this year in March, United Airlines announced the addition of the miles pooling program for their MileagePlus frequent flyer program.

While some other airlines have long allowed families or members of the same account group to combine points, United Airlines recently introduced a Miles Pooling program that makes it easier than ever for individuals to combine their miles and book flights together.
This can make a huge difference, especially when you’re close to an award flight but need just a few more miles.
In this post, we’ll look into everything you need to know about United Airlines miles pooling. How to sign up for it. And how to use it to your advantage. And the benefits of using this option for your travel needs.
United Airlines MileagePlus Miles Pooling
United Airlines MileagePlus Miles Pooling allows members of a MileagePlus account to combine miles with friends, family, or anyone else they trust in a shared “pool.” This makes it easier to reach the mileage thresholds required for award flights, upgrades, and other MileagePlus perks.
Whether you’ve earned miles through flying, credit card spending, or promotions, pooling helps you consolidate them with others to book trips that would otherwise be more difficult to achieve individually.

How Does United Miles Pooling Work?
Eligibility
To participate in Miles Pooling, you need to have a United MileagePlus account. This is free to join, and you can start accumulating miles with every flight, purchase, or credit card transaction.
Once you’re a member, you can pool your miles with up to 4 other MileagePlus members.
How to Set Up a Pool
Initiating a United miles pool is free and easy. Any MileagePlus member 18 years or older can start a miles pool and take on the role of the “pool leader”.
The pool leader can invite MileagePlus members to join their pool. These members can be family (including kids), friends or a mix, as long as they’re a MileagePlus member. A maximum of 5 can be in a miles pool.
Every pool member can contribute their MileagePlus miles to the shared pool.
The pool leader manages the miles pool and can authorize pool members to redeem miles.
Members can only participate in one miles pool. When a member departs from a pool, they lose access to their pool miles.

Transferring Miles Into Your Pool
For the pool leader, miles can be contributed into the miles pool as soon as the pool is created.
All pool members have to wait 72 hours after joining a pool until they can use pooled miles or contribute miles to the pool.
After transferring miles into the pool, all members of the pool, including the pool leader, will have to wait 24 hours before the miles are available to use for booking flights.
Once miles are transferred into the miles pool, they cannot be transferred out to an individual account.

Benefits of United Miles Pooling
Easier Award Bookings
One of the biggest advantages of Miles Pooling is the ability to combine miles to reach higher thresholds for award flights, upgrades, or other redemptions.
If you’ve ever been just a few thousand miles short of booking an award ticket, pooling can help you close the gap without needing to earn miles through additional flights or purchases.
Family Travel Made Simple
Family members can pool their miles to book a family trip, even if one person has accumulated more miles than the others. This can be especially helpful if you have kids, as they may not have earned enough miles for a flight on their own.
Flexibility
Miles pooling offers a high degree of flexibility. As long as the people involved in the pool trust one another, anyone can pool their miles with anyone else. Whether you’re pooling with family members, friends, or colleagues, you can have more control over your mileage balance and travel choices.
Save Time & Money
Pooling miles can allow you to book last-minute flights or upgrades that might otherwise be too costly in terms of miles. It can also help you avoid having to spend cash to cover the cost of an award ticket that you can’t quite reach.
